DC315 Intumescent Coating For Spray Foam Insulation

Overview

DC315 intumescent coating is a high-performance, single-component paint designed to improve the reaction to fire of spray foam insulation and other polyurethanes. It acts as a Thermal Barrier System and Ignition Barrier that can be applied over open and closed cell spray foams to achieve a Euroclass B-s1-d0 and B-s2-d0 reaction to fire rating as tested to BS EN 13501-1.

Ideal for coating over new or existing spray foam insulation to improve resistance to fire:

  • Existing Open Cell Spray Foam Insulation
  • Existing Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation
  • A new Open or Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation system.
  • Roofs, Attics, Walls, Crawlspaces, and Ceilings
  • Warehouses
  • Industrial and Agricultural Buildings
  • Exposed spray foam insulation in Steel Building Assemblies
  • Over existing Icynene Spray Foam Insulation.
  • Over existing LogicFoam Spray Foam Insulation.
  • Over existing Lapolla Spray Foam Insulation.
  • Over existing Synthesia Spray Foam Insulation.
  • Over existing ThermoFoam Spray Foam Insulation.
  • Over existing Isothane Spray Foam Insulation.
  • Over Existing BASF Spray Foam Insulation.

Application Methods:

  • Airless Spray (preferred)
  • Brush (multiple coats may be required)
  • Roller (multiple coats may be required)

Airless Spray Guidelines:

  • Airless Sprayer: Recommended (e.g., Graco Mark V / Titan Impact 1140)
  • Tip: 517–525 / Pressure: 2500–3000 psi
  • Roller/Brush: For touch-ups or confined areas

Brush Application: May result in ribbed appearance; multiple coats often required to achieve equivalent dry film thickness (DFT).

DC315 Recommended Installation Guidelines:

1. Surface Preparation

  • Allow SPF (e.g., Nexseal LE) to fully cure (24 hrs minimum)
  • Surface must be dry, clean, textured (orange peel or coarse)
  • Light abrasion or flash coat if surface is glossy
  • Remove contaminants and loose particles

2. Mixing & Application

  • Mix Mechanically: 4–5 minutes with paddle mixer
  • Do Not Thin (unless restoring sprayability with water per guide)
  • Application Tools:
    • Airless Sprayer: Recommended (e.g., Graco Mark V / Titan Impact 1140)
    • Tip: 517–525 / Pressure: 2500–3000 psi
    • Roller/Brush: For touch-ups or confined areas
  • Spray Technique:
    • Crosshatch (X-out) method for even coverage
    • Overlap 50% per stroke
    • Maintain airflow; avoid high humidity during curing

3. Curing Conditions

  • Ambient Temp: 50°F–90°F
  • Humidity: 50–65% optimal (max 85%)
  • Use fans and mechanical ventilation in enclosed areas
  • Cure time varies; ensure full cure before occupancy or topcoating

4. Clean-Up

    • Use clean water; do not allow to freeze
    • Store between 50°F and 80°F in sealed containers

DC315 Product Limitations

  • Not to be used as an exterior topcoat unless tested and approved
  • Do not exceed 24 mils WFT in a single coat
  • Not suitable for potable water contact or constant immersion
  • Not certified for use over unknown foam systems (must be tested per ESR)
  • Environmental conditions must be controlled during and after application
  • Pack Size: 5 Gallon/19-litre units
  • Shelf Life: 18-24 months from manufacture
  • Storage: Cool, dry conditions. Avoid prolonged moisture exposure before drying.
